"Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business"
If you where to look in the Oxford English Dictionary you woul struggle to find the true meaning of the phrase ‘ Business Excellence’.
business:- noun; 1 a person’s regular occupation or trade. 2 work to be done or matters to be attended to. 3 a person’s concern. 4 commercial activity. 5 a commercial organisation. 6 informal a difficult or problematic matter. 7 (the business) informal an excellent person or thing. 8 actions other than dialogue in a play.
excellence noun; the quality of being excellent.
‘Business Excellence’ is more than the sum of two definitions from a dictionary. It is about a number of fundamental concepts that challenge how organisations go about their business. It’s not about chasing awards to fill the trophy cabinet, or logos for your letterhead. Nor is it a theoretical or academic exercise divorced from the real work of the organisation. Business Excellence is all about making an organisation perform better; produce better profits; achieve success; deliver its aims. It’s about delivering real bottom line improvements in performance.
The ATOL approach to Business Excellence is based on 10 over years ‘hands on’ experience of introducing business improvement programmes into a wide and diverse group of businesses. In the early 90’s the approach was Baldrige based, it is now base around the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) excellence model.
ATOL is conscious of the fact that organisations are different and that applying a ‘one size fits all’ to business improvement will fail. Using the ATOL ‘geared’ approach allows a level of flexibility in the introduction of improvement activity depending on a clients needs and their level of excellence maturity. This could range from a simple ‘matrix’ application to ‘detailed assessment’.
I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business. - Michael J. Fox
